Last Friday I took some co-workers out to lunch at Surya (on Bleeker btw Christopher and 7th, my favorite indian restaurant in the city.) We'd been working really hard for the last couple of weeks and finished this particular sub-project on time and we never go out to eat - all good reasons. It was also a gorgeous day.

We took a cab back to the office and were on Christopher St and traffic was oddly jammed up. We were just at the intersection with Bedford and there were several people with large video cameras running around and there right in of us was huge grey SUV with the rear passenger window rolled down and a blond woman looking out of the window. She had an odd expression, like she was amused but also vary wary.

Martha Stewart.

She had VERY expensive hair (living in NYC, once in a while you see women with very expensive hair, the most expensive I've seen was Caroline Kennedy at a Sondheim retrospective at Lincoln Center.) So there we are in the cab, sitting and waiting for the cameramen to get the footage that they needed, and she's looking around to see what she needs to respond to, so I rolled down the window and waved at her. She looked at me for a second and I think maybe figured out that she was being filmed and this was a "good Martha or mean Martha?" moment, and she had no choice but to wave back.

I, unimportant person that I am, bent a very rich powerful person to my will.

Ultimately I decided that what I enjoyed - a fun silly moment - was not part of her experience. Or maybe it was. I can't imagine having people watch me like that.
