Wedding Photography
Mar. 14th, 2007 06:11 pmA friend of mine is to be the "officiant" at a wedding of friends of his being held in Puerto Rico. They were shocked at the cost of a wedding photographer and didn't want anything formal and he suggested that he knew someone (me) who might be interested in doing it if they paid my expenses to and from PR. What they wanted was a lot of candids with a few formal posed shots (although the research I did online led me to believe that no one who says that really means it) so my skills would be sufficient.
It seemed like a fun idea until I talked to the woman. She was nice but I realized I was asking her questions hoping that one of them would lead us both to believe that I wasn't suitable. Wedding photographers charge a lot because it's *hard* and because you get one chance so you have to know how to make every shot count and you have to have backup equipment, lighting, etc.
There wouldn't be any space for "oh well, something was screwey with the camera, sorry....".
Ernie thought I should do it and while I was writing this she called back and said she'd talked to her other possibility, a woman who has shot a number of weddings and would be willing to do theirs.
I'm still wondering if my gut reaction was correct and if I'd said yes it would have been a huge, sweaty mistake, or if I missed out on an opportunity to do something that I could charge for in the future.
