Garden review: home-grown potatoes
Aug. 31st, 2008 09:51 amThis year we grew potatoes, a couple of varieties but all of them small. The plants died off and I turned over the soil and voila! there were potatoes. There are still more there but I dug enough for four people. I let them soak a long time to get the dirt off and then cooked them in a lidded saucepan with butter, white pepper, salt, chopped rosemary, and a sprig of rosemary and some full sage leaves.
They were different from store-bought. Hard to put a description on but they were richer, nuttier, and some slight "green" taste. Very yummy.
Considering the amount of room they need and the yield I don't think I'd do them again, and if I did I'd grow them in hay, but they were definitely tasty.
