The brief wondrous life of Oscar Wao
Oct. 21st, 2008 08:22 amI am doing this on the iphone so am not including links, sorry, but I just now finished this book. In terms of language and cadence and expression it's amazing, like the best writing it's the equivalent of humming an earworm, my white boy language center is all "nigger please!" and dropping in Spanish words and cadences and shit. One of the amazing aspects is that it's all that but also includes comic and SF nerdism and intelligent characters who speak this Patterson/ Washington Heights style.
It's intensely heterosexual, down to the core, and that's the one part I didn't connect with, the whole sanctified pussy concept that destroys and gives all life worth living. But that is part of the culture so.
Junot Diaz. Read it.
