Race Point

I've felt that Provincetown is a special place since the first time I was there, in Sept of 1983, to visit with a guy who doctored there in the summer and at my alma mater, UCI, during the school year. I had moved from Laguna Beach to New Haven the preceding July.

After 8+ hours on buses (I didn't have a car) I found him and he told me that he was leaving on Friday (this was Thursday afternoon), not on Monday as we had discussed. I shouldn't have a hard time finding a place to stay, he said. I didn't. One of the places I stayed (it was different each night) led to my first impossible long-distance relationship, a habit which it doesn't matter if I have kicked or not.

I was there with my first lover for a week that he was attending a 1/2 day conference down the cape, and after he died I went there a few times as an escape and learned some lessons, and the major memory that I have is driving in a convertible with some new friends through the dunes at sunset listening to Erasure's _Blue Savannah_. Wonderful.

Our first Ptown BW was right when I started chemo; I thought it would be good to get away to someplace relaxing for a week and didn't realize how fucked up I was going to be, so I spent most of my time hiding in the condos wishing the extra colors in my vision were pretty ones.

The next time we went, two years later, I was fine but Ernie had some medical issues that turned out to be absolutely nothing, but all that hospital stuff colored the experience in a downward way.

The time before this that we went was for Halloween - "Spooky Bear" - and it was very soon after a major problem that I'd had to face up to and get help with. It was great, and we met some delightful people that continue to be in our lives.

The context this year was that we were both feeling like the outdoors time of year had not started because of all the rain and we both needed a break from work. We waffled in the run-up but when we decided we realized we had been sure all along. We rented a place very centrally located that would take dogs so that we could take Cooper out for a lot of walks without preplanning the entire day.

Everyone's experiences are unique but sometimes a group will get together and one person's joy and happiness will be apparent and increase the j and h of those around them, who were also producing their own j and h and bouncing that off of everyone else, leading to an overall high j and h energy. That's what this week was like for me and for others I've spoken to.
