Fun with studio lighting
Feb. 4th, 2005 03:40 pmI agreed to take some photos for some friends who have a singing group, and I decided to finally get some artificial light sources. It arrived yesterday and I nervously went through all the settings and calculations I thought I'd need. Turns out I know more about it than I thought, and came up with a few good pictures.
For anyone who's interested, it's an Alien Bees 800, in this case with the silver umbrella. I use it in remote slave mode, using a flash on top of my camera turned almost all the way down and pointed at the ceiling.
This first one is pretty much the way it came out of the camera:

There is so much gradation of tone in the original, reducing it to a 72 dpi jpeg seems just criminal.
( Here's another one where I was practicing balancing inside and outside light. )
