John Mayer
Feb. 11th, 2010 10:39 amI don't know much about John Mayer except for tabloid and online gossip stuff and I've always thought he was kind of a douche. I saw a link to this Playboy interview because of the quote I'm putting below (more on that in a few) but after reading the whole interview I actually like the guy. He seems to be relentlessly honest and says what he thinks - and sometimes people looking for insults will try to take them the wrong way.
On towleroad, this was put under the headline of "John Mayer's Only Gay Kiss Was a Pretend 'Fag' Bashing" which totally misrepresents and attempts to sensationalize what he said, which was:
PLAYBOY: Among the things we’ve read about you online is this: You’re gay. Have you ever kissed a man?
MAYER: The only man I’ve kissed is Perez Hilton. It was New Year’s Eve and I decided to go out and destroy myself. I was dating Jessica at the time, and I remember seeing Perez Hilton flitting about this club and acting as though he had just invented homosexuality. All of a sudden I thought, I can outgay this guy right now. I grabbed him and gave him the dirtiest, tongue-iest kiss I have ever put on anybody—almost as if I hated fags. I don’t think my mouth was even touching when I was tongue kissing him, that’s how disgusting this kiss was. I’m a little ashamed. I think it lasted about half a minute. I really think it went on too long.

In an interview with The 7pm Project, John Mayer discusses his outing to a Palm Springs gay bar, after which Radar Online reported that he had been kissed by a man, "and seemed to enjoy it."

Says Mayer: “If you are a man in life and you haven’t gone to a gay bar, you haven’t really danced. Because you’re talking about a bar full of men without that dumb, alpha-male, ego, pushing, shouldering… you can actually have a great time without worrying in this sort of alpha-dog defensive position of like, who's over here, who's gonna try and come up, and who's gonna talk shit, and who's gonna do this and do that. You can actually just go and have a great time. We did have such a great time, to hear that somebody had written a story that I was getting kisses planted on me, it just sort of reduces it to that real stereotypical...you know that's why I wrote, after that I was like nobody's more aggressive than drunk white chicks. They're terrible.”

I mean, he's a celeb and this isn't important but as more and more adult straight guys have grown up knowing that being gay is just part of reality, and having gay friends, there's going to be more and more guys talking like he did. And - he TONGUE-KISSED a guy. Even as an aggressive act, it's not something that someone who hates gay people is going to do.
